Privacy Policy
Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains what the Argus browser extension records, where that information is kept, and the choices you have. Argus is free and open source. It has no accounts and no server: everything it records stays in your browser, on your device. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the extension.
What Argus Records
While tracking is on, the extension records the following in your browser:
- The websites you visit, by domain name (for example "example.com"), not the full address of each page
- The time you actively spend on each website, per day and per hour of the day
- How many times you visited each website
- The title and icon address of a page from each website, to label it in the extension
- Your settings, your block list, your focus sessions, and how often a blocked site was stopped
Important: Argus does NOT record what you type, click or scroll, the content of pages, passwords, credit card numbers or form data. Browser pages, extension pages and local files are not tracked.
How Argus Uses This Information
- To show you statistics and charts about your own browsing
- To block the websites you ask Argus to block, and to run focus sessions
That is all. Argus does not use your browsing data for advertising or analytics, and does not build profiles from it.
Where Your Information Is Kept
Everything Argus records is stored in your browser's own extension storage, on your device. Argus has no server and no accounts, and it does not send your data anywhere. We cannot see it. History is kept for the last 90 days; older days are removed automatically.
To show a website's icon next to its name, the extension may load that icon from the address the browser reported for the site (the same icon the website already showed you). No information about your browsing is sent with that request.
If you export a backup, Argus saves a file to your computer. Where that file goes next is up to you.
Disclosure of Your Information
Because your data never leaves your device, we have nothing to sell, share or hand over. We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your browsing data to anyone.
Links to Other Websites
The extension contains links you can choose to open: Donate (to our page on Ko-fi), Source code (to GitHub) and this Privacy Policy. Those websites have their own privacy policies. Opening them is your choice; Argus sends them nothing about your browsing.
Earlier Versions with Accounts
Versions of Argus before 2.0 offered optional accounts, a paid plan and syncing across devices. Those have been removed. The server that held accounts and synced data was switched off on October 25, 2026, and that data is being deleted; no copies are kept. When the extension updates to version 2.0, it also removes any sign-in and sync information left in your browser, and keeps your history, settings and block list.
Security of Your Information
Your data stays inside your browser and is protected by your browser and your device. The extension is built so that it cannot connect to any server, and its source code is public, so anyone can check what it does.
Children's Privacy
The Argus extension is not intended for use by children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not use the extension.
Your Choices
You can control your data in the following ways:
- Pause tracking: turn on "Pause tracking" in the extension settings and nothing is recorded until you turn it off
- Export a backup: download your data as a file from the extension settings, and restore it later from the same place
- Clear data: delete everything Argus has stored in your browser with "Clear all data" in the extension settings
- Uninstall: removing the extension deletes everything it stored in your browser
